You Know Its Bad When You Can’t Take Enough Time to Pee!
We have been talking a lot about balance and having a life outside of “church.” I get so many questions about how to juggle having kids, being married, the desire to give our best to the church, work, and having enough time left over to be the best you can be personally. It can be a crazy game. Here is my two word answer. Be intentional.
in-ten’-tion-al~ things that are done DELIBERATELY. Most people are too random with their time. They just run around with no real purpose, or they don’t get anything done because they are involved in too much.
For the past four years, I have poured everything I have into CFAN. So, a few weeks before taking some time off I rescheduled my week to get the most of my time and also live life outside of the four walls of the church. It wasn’t uncommon for me to be at the church 4-5 nights a week. I put a stop to that early…after I saw how it was getting out of hand. So, here is my schedule now…with some things I am changing for the next season.
Sunday- I am up at 5am and most mornings even earlier because I am jacked up! I try to make it to the church by 5:30am but if I get into my office for prayer it’s usually over because I will end up enjoying it so much that I get a little later start. 7am is my Illuminate group. 9:30 is the first service and I usually come in for the whole service preach and greet then head back to my office for the 11 service. At the 11, I will change undershirts drink some liquid and then normally head back out at the beginning of the last song. Preach greet and then head home to craasssh hard. After, I get up…JM and I have started this tradition of watching a movie together…so I veg and do that and then Sunday night is everyone pile up in my office, bedroom, or family room and just goof off.
Monday- Technically my day off, but I use the better part of the early morning to debrief from Sunday and study for the sermon in two weeks. I try hard to stay two weeks in advance sermon prep wise. It just works better for me that way. Once, I nail down a concept then I tackle content. Monday night is for my family.
Tuesday- Early morning prayer with my staff and leaders. Then breakfast with one of my pastors for some mentoring and vision casting. Then we have our senior leadership meeting to discuss a wide array of issues. In the afternoon, I spend time with my executive pastor to go over order of service and budget for the next couple of weeks. Tuesday night is for my family.
In keeping with my promise of short posts…I’ll put up the rest tomorrow. Have a great intentional day.
