I thought that this was just an excellent post from Craig Groeschel.

Becoming Friends With Your Pastor

Most of our blogging friends are pastors. A few are wonderful church members (or in our case, church partners). I’m writing this post for church members. Pastors, you might want to link to it so you can help your church members have insight into your world and know how to minister to you. I’m hoping many of you will add more insight to this subject.

I’ll break this post into PART A and post PART B tomorrow.

(Note: all pastors won’t agree with me. I’m guessing most will at most points.)

PART A

If you want to become friends with your pastor, here are some suggestions:

  1. Don’t be pushy. Pushy people come across as needy. We minister to needy people all day. We crave friendships not more counseling appointments.
  2. Don’t tell us “God told you” we’re going to be friends. He may have, but that doesn’t work on us. Tons of people have told us that before. Friendship for us needs to happen over time, not be born because of something God told you but not us.
  3. Coming to a stranger’s house for dinner isn’t the high point of our lives. (You know a lot about us. We don’t know as much about you.) We work a lot of nights. Our kids are busy. Finding a babysitter is hard. Bringing our kids to your house often puts stress on us. A night at home is often more meaningful than a dinner at your house. (Some pastors will disagree with me and be very blessed by these dinners. Most aren’t.)
  4. My wife doesn’t want to send our kids to your house just because you want to baby sit them. You are probably an incredible person, but we don’t know about your neighbors or your kids’ friends or your uncle that might come by. There are too many weird people for us to send our kids to your house without knowing more.
  5. We are grateful for “gift cards.” Many pastors don’t have the financial margin to take their families out. Gift cards mean a lot.
  6. We love talking to you about things besides church and the Bible. We have other interests like you.
  7. We love your notes of appreciation. They mean more than you know. You have a way of sending them when we really need them. Thank you!

(Eight more suggestions are coming tomorrow…)

Wow…I mean wow.

Some quick stats for you.

  • 14 people re-dedicated or gave their life to the Lord for the first time today.
  • 19 Baptized
  • 2nd largest attended CFAN service ever.

Recap for the day.

  • I am flat exhausted. No other way to put it…as a matter of fact I am so tired I couldn’t even fall asleep for a good nap.
  • Praise and Worship was absolutely incredible. The team was unreal.
  • We ran out of every chair that we had in both kids church and the main sanctuary.
  • The pool we baptized in was just perfect. I have to admit I was a little scared but we we pulled it off.
  • Our creative team is the absolute best. I mean just the best.
  • It was nice baptizing with five other people. Nice training up others.
  • The Thrill of the Grill was some serious competition, but in the end the Grillin’ Brazilian pulled it off. Al and Ricardo you guys tore it up!
  • Happy Birthday Al!
  • Kyle and Jess had their kids ready and pumped for the baptisms it was stellar.
  • My boys made me so happy and proud. I am so crazy proud of those two.
  • Pastor Roy trying to climb the inflatable was a sight to see :P
  • Sarah and John jumping in the other inflatable was a sight to see :P

Sorry, but I have to cut it off there. Too much really to post in one recap. I’ll post some pictures soon. Thanks again CFANnies. You guys are the best!

Brag on your kids today.

My kids are so awesome (not perfect)…but they are so awesome that I wanted to spend some time talking about my dudes and dudettes.

John Michael- My oldest. He is the classic alpha dog. I love it because he champions the cause of the underdog and loves to be around people at all times. He is just a wonderful natural leader. I tell him all the time…that I will pay him a million dollars not to grow up. He is something special and he is soooo smart it’s scary. He is getting to a point where he can hold his own with me in a debate. The one thing I love is when I hear him in his room putting together legos singing praise and worship songs from Kids Church or from his chapel at school. He is tender towards the Lord. I love it.

Benjamin- Also, known at ML COOL B.  Since we won’t let him talk about the ladies…his momma is his leading lady. He is smart and makes seriously good grades, but the thing I love about Benji is his humor. The kid is just slap stick comedy, and he thinks he is smooth. My favorite thing about this kid is his heart for God and his love for the church. He is getting baptised for the first time Sunday and guess what…it was his idea.

Averee- I love my first daughter so much so sometimes my heart wants to burst. She loves clothes more than her daddy. She works hard to change clothes a million times. She is sweet, smart, and she loves her poppy. I will be sitting in my chair in the office and she will bring me a cup of ice water…no telling where the cup has been…but it is the thought that matters. It is funny how sophisticated she can be and then also at the same time how childlike in the very next moment.

Addy- Cinammon or Hotsauce depending on what day you get a hold of her. She has her dads fiery personality and her mom’s beauty. I’m hoping she keeps the beauty and that God will temper the fire a bit…either way…I love her smile…it lights up the room. Nothing better than just scooping her up and squeezing the very life out of her…or wanting to pinch her chubby cheeks so hard.

I have been challenged this week like none before…it’s funny because anytime we schedule a baptism all hell breaks loose. I am pumped because right now it looks like we are going to baptize quite a few people and we are going to do it like its going out of style! I don’t care about what the enemy may throw at us…I am going forward into what God has for us.

Let me hit you with this quote from Bil Cornelius.

Let me tell it to leaders straight:  One leading indicator to know we are geared towards reaching the unchurched well, is that the “churched” hate the way we do things.  Think about it.

I am proud of CFAN because I know that we are more poised to reach people far from Christ than ever before!! Make sure and take the plunge!!
